Achieving Volume, Variety, and Visual Consistency with AI Tools
Project Overview & Goal:
For the LBE game "Wayfarer" (and for ongoing personal IP development), a key requirement was to rapidly explore diverse character visual styles and then, once a direction was chosen, efficiently produce multiple illustrations and assets featuring that character with a high degree of visual consistency – a common challenge with AI image generation.
The Challenge: Efficient & Consistent Character Visuals
Developing compelling and visually consistent characters is fundamental to any narrative project. For "Wayfarer" and ongoing IP development, the challenge was to rapidly explore a wide range of character styles and archetypes, and then – crucially – ensure that selected character designs could be reproduced consistently across multiple illustrations for marketing, pre-production, and style guidance, a common limitation of early AI image generation
My Process & Solution: : A Strategic, Multi-Tool AI Approach
My process for AI-assisted character development focuses on leveraging different AI tools for their specific strengths, guided by art direction principles:

High-Volume Concept Exploration: Utilized AI image generators (primarily Google's Gemini/Imagen 3) to produce over 100 initial character concepts based on descriptive prompts. This allowed for rapid exploration of diverse visual styles, ethnicities, attire, and moods far exceeding manual sketching capabilities in the same timeframe.

Artistic Curation & Refinement: Applied art direction expertise to meticulously review and curate the generated concepts, selecting those best aligned with project narrative and style. Minor Photoshop refinements were made as needed.

Developing AI-Assisted Style Sheets: For chosen concepts, I further directed AI tools to generate views suitable for creating foundational character turnaround sheets (approximating front, side, 3/4 views, key expressions).

Ensuring Production Consistency: Leveraged specialized AI features, such as Dzine AI's "Consistent Character" model, using the refined style sheets as strong visual references. This enabled the generation of new illustrations and poses of the same character while maintaining high fidelity to the established design.
